Our origins

The 60's

In the early 1960s, a group of Spanish entrepreneurs started a business project that would be the origin of Técnicas Reunidas.

Origins

Creation of Lummus Española, S.A., resulting from the association between several Spanish business owners and the North American engineering firm, The Lummus Company

1963
First complete refinery

The company designs and builds its first complete refinery in Spain, thus beginning its career as specialist in refinery units.

1968
First international ``turnkey`` project

The company executes the Luján de Cuyo refinery project in Argentina for Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales, SA (YPF), the first ``turnkey`` project abroad.

1970

Técnicas Reunidas is born

The 70's

In the 1970s, Técnicas Reunidas designed most of the nuclear power plants in Spain.

1971
Founding of Empresarios Agrupados. Design of nuclear power plants.

In 1971 with the objective of accompanying national energy development, the company participated in the creation of Empresarios Agrupados. It participated in the design of the majority of Spanish nuclear power plants, and it is present on numerous energy projects.

1972
Técnicas Reunidas S.A.

In 1972 the company absorbs Tecniresa. It adopts the current corporate name, and it becomes a company with 100% spanish capital.

Expansion

The 80's

International expansion begins. Técnicas Reunidas pioneer Spanish company in China

1981
Large ``turnkey`` projects

At the beginning of the 80's, TR promoted the contracting of large ``turnkey`` projects in international markets. In 1981 TR was the successful bidder on the Dumai hydrocracking complex, a ``turnkey`` project in Indonesia for Pertamina.

1988
Pioneering Spanish company in China

TR was one of the first engineering and construction firms to set up in China, that occurred the end of the 80`s. Now, after having been present in the country for over 20 years, it has developed projects in various areas, including petrochemicals, fertilisers and iron and steel.

Consolidation

Consolidation of international presence and first combined cycles in Spain

As of the 90's, major international expansion has been taking place in the following countries: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, USA, Egypt, Philippines, Greece, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, Venezuela and Yugoslavia.

First combined cycle plants

For Técnicas Reunidas, the end of the 90's represented the beginning of what would become its subsequent consolidation as a benchmark engineering firm for the combined cycle plants that have been built in Spain.

Spectacular growth

21st century begins

The Técnicas Reunidas brand is consolidated worldwide, allowing it to enter new markets and gain the trust of large customers.

Acquisition of the state entreprise, INITEC

In the year 2000, Tecnicas Reunidas acquired Initec, S.A., which specialises in industrial plant projects, natural gas projects and other infrastructures.

2003
First project in the Persian Gulf

The Yanbu hydrotreater complex for Saudi Aramco. For Tecnicas Reunidas, the project represented the company's entry in a new strategic market, countries of the Persian Gulf.

2006
IPO. IBEX 35

On 21 June 2006, Tecnicas Reunidas went public, and two years after going public, it entered the IBEX 35.

2007
Large projects and spectacular growth

In 2007 and 2008, Tecnicas Reunidas continued its growth with the award of large refining projects in petrochemicals, upstream and natural gas.

Adherence to the Global Compact and a new record in awards

From 2010

Presence of Spanish technology and engineers in the most emblematic projects at an international level.

50th Anniversary

Tecnicas Reunidas turns 50 as one of the top 10 engineering firms in the world.

In 2011, Técnicas Reunidas committed to compliance with the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact, betting on a sustainable business development model as the only viable way to boost the growth of the economy worldwide.

Técnicas Reunidas continues its projects in the difficult environment caused by the global pandemic, establishing work-from-home measures in record time with its more than 8,000 employees, clients and suppliers.

Participation in more than 40 initiatives to promote recovery and growth in Spain and in European sustainability projects.

Técnicas Reunidas participates in initiatives related to hydrogen, biomass, biofuels, decarbonisation, artificial intelligence and digitalisation. In addition, it has been awarded new large-scale contracts in Poland, Turkey, the Netherlands, Argentina, Qatar, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

2022
Flagship energy transition projects

The company gets an engineering contract for the development of a carbon capture power plant in Peterhead (UK) and joins the project promoted by the HyDeal consortium for the construction of several renewable hydrogen production facilities in northern Spain. It is also awarded contracts for four combined cycle plants in Mexico, the expansion of the North Field project (Qatar) and a large ethylene plant in Antwerp (Belgium).
