Técnicas Reunidas signs an agreement with IGNIS to provide engineering services for the development of green ammonia projects in Spain

  • The agreement has been signed within the framework of the Ignis P2X project launched by Ignis together with KKR.
  • It covers collaboration from the conceptual phase to the complete execution of the investment.
  • Total investment could exceed 5 billion euros.
  • The co-development of low-carbon technology projects with large operators is part of track, Técnicas Reunidas’ strategy for decarbonization.
  • The initiatives of track are receiving a strong boost within the framework of SALTA, Técnicas Reunidas’ new strategic program.

Técnicas Reunidas has signed an agreement with IGNIS P2X to provide engineering services for the design of up to five green ammonia projects in different locations in Spain, with a possible final investment that could exceed 5 billion euros.

Through the agreement, Técnicas Reunidas will provide engineering services for the design of the projects from the feasibility phase, the detailed design (FEED), including the evaluation and selection of technologies. The agreement also contemplates alternatives for the execution of the projects, whose locations have already been identified.

This agreement is part of IGNIS’ strategy in the field of new energy vectors. IGNIS is a global vertically integrated company, focused in the renewable energy sector and in innovative energy solutions. Since its creation in 2015, IGNIS promotes the development of a portfolio of more than 20 GW of renewable projects in Europe, USA, Latin America and Asia. It currently leads energy management with an operational portfolio of 6.6 GW of generation technologies and offers customized and innovative energy solutions to industry, SMEs and end-consumers.

Recently, IGNIS has announced together with KKR the launch of the IGNIS P2X platform. This platform will mainly develop hydrogen and green ammonia projects for industrial applications in industrial sectors that are difficult to be decarbonized, including green hydrogen, ammonia, e-methanol, e-fuels and SAF production plants, which will provide services for leading companies in their sectors such as refining, steel, chemical and fertilizers, among others.

track, Técnicas Reunidas’ strategy for decarbonization

Técnicas Reunidas calls track its decarbonization strategy, launched last year.

In addition to the traditional turnkey project execution (EPC) and project design (FEED) services, track includes the execution of engineering services in the investment definition stages, project co-development, decarbonization of existing assets and activities in new industries.

In 2023 and during the first months of 2024, Técnicas Reunidas was awarded more than 300 million euros in projects related to low-emission technologies.

These awards are engineering services contracts for projects in the hydrogen value chain, biofuels or carbon capture. Técnicas Reunidas has devoted more than 1.8 million engineering hours to the execution of these projects.

In the hydrogen value chain, Técnicas Reunidas has worked on the design of plants with a total electrolysis capacity of 6,700 MW, which is more than six times the current installed capacity of 1,070 MW in the world, according to data from the International Energy Agency.

One of track’s main commitments is the creation of investment opportunities in decarbonization projects. To meet this challenge, it has launched a new project development and co-development activity.

Extensive experience in low-carbon ammonia projects

The projects included in the agreement with IGNIS are in addition to Técnicas Reunidas’ current references in green ammonia, which is considered key for the decarbonization of the fertilizer and shipping industry, or for the transport of green hydrogen.

These references include projects already announced to the market, such as:

  • Atlas Agro: FEED execution of a green fertilizer plant located on the west coast of the United States with a production capacity of 650,000 tons per year of ammonia.
  • Fortescue: execution of a FEED for a green ammonia plant in Norway with a green hydrogen production capacity of 300 MW using electrolyzers.
  • Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners: execution of a FEED for a 500 MW green hydrogen production plant using electrolyzers in Andorra (Teruel, Spain).

SALTA strategic program: a strong boost to decarbonization

The activities carried out by Técnicas Reunidas through track are receiving an important boost within the framework of SALTA, the new strategic program that the company presented publicly at the end of last May.

The agreement with IGNIS is on line with SALTA’s main drivers, which include support for clients in the early stages of project development and the co-development of projects with companies of highly recognized prestige in the energy sector.
